This post is the second in a series about the “Enemies of Creativity.” Click here to read our last post regarding this.
Our second enemy is young children feeling overly comfortable in the camera room. Now this may seem counterintuitive, but it’s not. In your session, the first 15 minutes are critical to capturing your timeless portrait. When young children (those under 5) are feeling a little uncertain, a little clingy to Mom and Dad, that is when we will capture their timeless, pensive expressions. We never would want a child to feel timid or afraid, but feeling uncertain about their environment is the most conducive for us to capture a beautiful image. What we suggest is that parents carry their children from the car to the dressing room and then from the dressing room to in front of the camera. Our goal is for a child’s feet to not touch the ground until they absolutely have to do so.
As a parent, you know that we only have a precious window of time to capture your child’s personality so it is best to go from a more controlled shot to something more playful. At the end of the session, we like to capture their more silly, playful sides.
