Procrastination…how to overcome.

“Regret for the things we did can be tempered by time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable.”

Sydney Harris

Procrastinating on getting professional portraits of your family and children is pretty common, especially since it involves coordinating schedules, selecting outfits, and possibly dealing with the stress of getting everyone to cooperate.

Here are some ideas to help you overcome procrastination that have helped us and others.

1. Set a Specific Date and Time

  • Commit to a Date: Choose a date a few weeks in advance, put it on your calendar, and inform everyone involved. Having a set date makes it harder to delay.

  • Book Early (as in right now): Call or text or email to book your session. This will lock you into the commitment.

2. Break It Down

  • Small Steps: Break the process into smaller tasks. Tackle one task at a time so it doesn't feel overwhelming.

  • Daily Task: Dedicate just 10-15 minutes each day to planning or organizing something for the session.

3. Use Visual Reminders

  • Inspiration: Place photos you love somewhere visible, like your fridge or phone background. This can serve as motivation to follow through.

  • Reminder Notes: Leave yourself notes where you’ll see them, reminding you of the upcoming session and what needs to be done.

4. Make it Fun for the Kids

  • Involve the Children: If they’re excited, it can make the process more enjoyable and reduce stress.

  • Turn it into an Event: Plan something fun afterward, like a family outing or treat, so there’s something to look forward to.

5. Focus on the Long-Term Value

  • Think of the Memories: Remind yourself of how valuable these portraits will be in the future. They’re a way to capture moments you’ll cherish forever, and that can be a powerful motivator.

  • Imagine the Finished Portrait: Visualize how good it will feel to have the beautiful portraits displayed in your home or shared with loved ones.

6. Accountability

  • Tell a Friend: Share your plans with a friend or family member who can check in on your progress and encourage you to stay on track.

  • Social Media: Consider announcing your plans on social media. The public commitment might push you to follow through.

7. Ease the Pressure

  • Relax Expectations: Don’t aim for perfection. Family portraits are about capturing this moment in time, even if everything isn’t perfect.

  • Trust us: We will guide you and make everyone look great. You don’t have to worry about every detail. We have a designer and stylist on our team who will help you every step of the way. She is a gem! Check her out here.

We hope these strategies will help you overcome the temptation to postpone your session or procrastinate. We look forward to seeing your name on our schedule!
